Today we left Edinburgh. Thanks to everyone who pitched up at The Golf Tavern to give us a great sending off. With our bikes facing Tampere when we left the meadows it was not long after we made our first stop... That's right we made our first stop before we even reached the outskirts of the city! Funny enough, after the 1km Oskar destroyed his inner tube! Ted was fine with this as he was able to enjoy some further stretching and continue his warm-up routine - and eat a brownie!
15km in we took a quick break at a gas station where we found some good grass to make our first video, check out the link below. We touched on our equipment and soon we were back on the road.
The roads we long, hilly but thankfully they were smooth. Smooth is good considering that we are carrying roughly 20kg of kit with us. This includes our tent, cooker, tools, lock and food etc. The biggest challenge for us on day 1 was getting solid consistency, getting into the habit of cycling uphill with this extra weight. Some of the hills had gradients of up to 16% (Keranen and Wiese, 2013) the day was filled with fantastic views, sites and fresh air. We made it to St. Boswells behind schedule but considering the amount of daylight that was left we decided to power through to Jedburgh after a quick cup of tea. We tested our Trangia Cooker for the first time and it works miracles!
We powered through the the last 20km in under an hour, despite the small hills throughout. Oskar and Ted
Made it to camp on time! :D We made it to first destination, in Jedburgh!
"No wifi. Tent is up, had food, in bed. Success! Eggs and porridge for breakfast! Gd night all :) " - Oskar
We finished off the day with dinner, a quick clean and after setting up camp it was time for bed. Day 2 looked really tough but the weather seemed promising.
